Two towns that complete each other
Safranbolu and Amasra are very different, which is exactly why they work well together. Safranbolu carries the memory of inland Anatolia in its preserved houses, bazaars and inns; Amasra brings the sea, a peninsula and a castle.
Safranbolu
Safranbolu was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1994 as a well-preserved example of a traditional Ottoman town. It grew as an important stop on the Istanbul–Sinop caravan route, and its houses, with timber and stone combined and upper floors projecting over the street, reveal how large families lived, worked and welcomed guests.
Hıdırlık Hill is a good starting point for understanding the town's layout from above. Nearby, the İncekaya Aqueduct and canyons add natural scenery, while Yörük village, a protected settlement of historic houses, shows the same architectural tradition at village scale. Safranbolu Turkish delight and saffron products are classic souvenirs.
Amasra
After Safranbolu's valleys, Amasra's peninsula and natural harbours are a striking change of scene. The castle walls and the Kemere Bridge are within easy walking distance, and the Amasra Museum displays archaeological and ethnographic collections in a historic building. The town is known for seafood, its salad tradition and wooden handicrafts.
Season and booking tips
Weather can change within a day as you move from inland Safranbolu to the coast, so pack a light jacket. Staying overnight in Safranbolu lets you see the old town in the quieter evening and morning hours. Before booking, check the net time in each town, museum entrances, included meals and whether İncekaya or Yörük village is really part of the programme. Remember that Safranbolu's historic neighbourhoods are lived in, so respect residents' privacy.
